The Professional Hornist:
A Practical Reference Guide to Pursuing Horn Playing
The Professional Hornist: A Practical Reference Guide to Pursuing Horn Playing is intended for those studying the horn in need of supplemental guidance. The information included here is inspired from many bumps in the road encountered when horn shopping, taking various auditions, and writing a CV. “Real-world” application as a music student hits hard and hits while you are in school. As a part of my undergraduate curriculum, whether you are getting called for gigs, taking auditions, or realize your student horn is not going to hold up, The Professional Hornist will help point you in the right direction.
This guide is not intended to replace learning-by-experience; this is a resource to supplement private teaching. It has undergone many revisions and a formal defense. Others may have different viewpoints about some of the entries however, this is what I believe to be a balanced perspective and matter-of-fact resource rather than one of a more subjective nature.
The Professional Hornist is split into three parts: Entering the Professional Realm, Practicality, and Equipment. This guide addresses working with other people, finding resources and information, pursuing professional arenas of playing, and horn-specific issues concerning equipment. This may be targeted towards horn players, but many rising professionals may find use out of the first two sections. While this could be a lifelong project, this guide is intended to serve as a starting point, not an end-all-be-all.
